About

I was born in California, grew up in Virginia, lived in Los Angeles for a while, and now call Portland, OR, home, where I share a hundred-year old house with my wife, Sara Rivara, and our five cats.

I’ve been an instructional designer since the 1990’s, and a fiction writer slightly longer than that. I got my MFA from the Warren Wilson Program for Writers.

Before I got my MFA, I spent ten years in the music business, including stints as director of marketing for a record label and creative director for a publishing company.
